The Alpilles hills make for some astounding scenery in this region, and its many villages are wonderful examples of the pure Provence tradition.
Perched up on its cliff top, the village of Les Baux-de-Provence, is sculpted from the white rock, and reigns over a valley covered with olive and almond groves, and vineyards. The attraction of the sunlight playing on the scenery is only outdone by the warmth and welcome of the villages. Alphonse Daudet is the bard of this region, and his writings capture the contrasting shapes and colours of the Durance plains and the hills of the Montagnette and the Alpilles.
