The Bouches-du-Rhône department
offers visitors a wide range of scenery and natural
sites. Calanques (rocky creeks) hills, plains and marshes
lie side by side under the blue sky of Provence. Ancient
Phocaean mariners knew what they were at when they accosted
these pleasant shores 2600 years ago to create what
was to become Marseille.
Over the centuries, they have left monuments all around
the region which can still be admired today. At present,
the villages and towns of Provence manage to preserve
their Mediterranean history while looking resolutely
to the future. That's one of the reasons that this lifestyle
is appreciated all over the world.
