Water is the keynote of this region in the
Rhone delta. The Camargue extends from the Alpilles hills
to the Crau plain and down to the Mediterranean. In the peace
of these vast open spaces, people try to reconcile economic
development with the need for conservation of this fragile
ecological niche. The area is a nature reserve abounding in
wetlands, reed beds, lakes and rice paddies that are home
to a great variety of wildlife including flamingos, bulls
and the famous Camargue white horses.
Arles
"A Arles où sont les Alyscamps,
quand l'ombre est rouge sous les roses et clair de temps,
prend garde à la douceur des choses"
P.J. TOULET
Arles is the gateway to the wild Camargue.
Known as "Little Rome" because of its Roman history,
it is particularly fond of traditional festivals. In this
setting much loved by Van Gogh, Arles is a happy marriage
of ancient and modern..
