The regional capital and the surrounding area
provide many contrasts. There is the intense business activity
and life of Marseille and its suburbs, including the Marseille-Provence
Airport, but also the hills filled with memories of the famous
writer Marcel Pagnol, the beach at La Ciotat, and the unspoilt
calanques or rocky creeks right in the heart of the city.

Marseille, the city with a hundred districts
"Aimer Marseille c'est choisir la vie"
GABRIEL AUDISIO
"Attentive, elle écoute la voix
du vaste monde, et forte de son expérience,
elle envisage en notre nom, la conversation avec la terre
entière"
ALBERT LONDRES
Marseille reflects all aspects of human nature.
It can be rebellious, insubordinate, but still respects "Mother"
(the cathedral that dominates the city is known as la Bonne
Mère); it is very attached to the old port and everything
stops for a pastis before dinner. Wind and sea, odours and
accents, colours and ethnic groups, everything adds to the
potent brew that seems to be in perpetual motion.
Marseille is both one and many. It is a huge metropolis made
up of a hundred villages, a historical city and a major Mediterranean
port. Celebrating its 2600-year centenary was a conscious
act of integrating its prestigious past while proving to the
world that it was ready to grapple with the future. Walk in
the narrow streets of Endoume overlooking the sea, take part
in the many street events, or take a boat out to the islands.
Meet Marseille, and reinvent history at each step.
