Follow la ruelle de la Libération, then the chemin
de l'Ermitage (little streets) to the foot of the ruins. On
the plateau you have a fine view over the Berre Lake and the
valley of the River Arc. You will discover lovely views of
the Mount Sainte-Victoire. After the botanical garden, the
path drops down to a garrigue (scrubland) just re-growing.
Take the path that leads to the D64, then the chemin du Rigouès.
You are entering the communal forest of Ventabren. In the
distance you'll see the top of an aqueduct with its regular
arches. You arrive directly at the Canal de Marseille, which
carries the waters of the River Durance. Follow the canal
until you can cross it. The scenery is very rugged and the
path is stony. Take the D 64 which takes you to the aqueduct.
The gentle lapping of the River Arc, and the light playing
on the rocky sides of the gorge tempt you in for a swim, or
you can just laze on the peaceful green bank. You can't help
but admire the architecture of the aqueduct. Go past the first
arch of the aqueduct and climb the steep path. At the top
you reach a canal keeper's house. The view is quite exceptional.
A path leads you along the Baou Mario cliff with an oppidum
on top. You are back on the plateau. Carry on to the clearing
and finish the walk back the way you came along the 3 km to
Ventabren.
